Chair of Science Communication with a focus on Linguistics
Welcome to the Chair of Science Communication with a focus on linguistics!
We research the use of language, especially in science journalism and science PR. The focus is on negotiation processes in digital communication. We use methods from qualitative social research, applied linguistics and cognitive science. On the one hand, we are interested in the fundamentals of communicative action in science communication; on the other hand, we work closely with professional and practical fields.
Our research topics include the reception of crisis communication in digital formats (MIRKKOMM), the accessibility of hard-to-reach target groups, the investigation of discourses on relevant topics such as health communication and artificial intelligence (DiPubHealth, RHET AI) and the investigation of communication at universities.
Together with the scientific management of NaWik, we research the reception of new and digital formats of science communication in our eye-tracking laboratory.
At the same time, we are science communicators ourselves: on the wissenschaftskommunikation.de portal, we provide exciting insights into current research.

- RHET AI Center: Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence
- In the Discourse an Narrative Unit, the Center, in cooperation with the Chair, has been investigating science communication on artificial intelligence from a rhetorical, linguistic and media studies perspective since 2021. (Sponsor: Volkswagen Foundation)
- MIRKKOMM: Analysis of the reception of multimodal crisis and risk communication by citizens and public authority employees
- Since 2021, the project has been investigating the criteria of successful communication that contributes to overcoming a crisis by strengthening the population's trust in state crisis management and promoting solution-oriented behavior from the addressee's perspective. (Sponsor BMBF)
- DiPubHealth: Discourses on public health topics. Actors, strategies, formats
- From 2021-2024, the project researches the discourse dynamics of problem-centered social debates in order to identify relevant actors as well as communicative amplifiers and traps in public discourses on scientific topics. One goal is the targeted further development of science communication formats (sponsor: Bayer Foundation)
- HoKoPro: University communication at non-state universities: practice and organization
- From 2023-2026, the project compares the organization of communication practice between private universities and individual private university organizations in order to gain insights into the logics, strategies and practice of communication at non-state universities from the perspective of sociology of science and communication science.
